Among Jonathan’s first roles after training was Rochester in Jane Eyre at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh. Later, in the West End, he created the role of Kenneth Horne in the long-running comedy hit Round the Horne… Revisited, playing him again in such shows as Horne A’Plenty and Round the Horne – Unseen and Uncut.

His many other stage roles include Dr Rank in A Doll’s House (Salisbury Playhouse), Eisenring in The Fire Raisers (Battersea Arts Centre), Gerald in Time and the Conways(Mercury Colchester) and Inspector Hubbard in Dial ‘M’ for Murder (Theatre Royal Windsor). He’s also toured as Frank in Educating Rita and Higgins in Pygmalion. Among Jonathan’s directing credits are the one-woman show Haunted Shadows and a revival of the all-female play Women of Twilight.

On screen, Jonathan played parapsychologist Harry Price in the part-animated feature film Borley Rectory. Other screen credits include, for the BBC, Lennon Naked, Round the Horne… Revisited, WPC 56, The Canterville Ghost, Lot No.249 and various episodes of Father Brown. BBC Radio credits include The Corrupted, Twice Ken is Plenty (as Kenneth Horne) and Loose Ends.

Jonathan is also a noted film historian and author of several books.
