Russell trained at LAMDA and graduated in 1984 playing the title role in Richard III.

He began his career at the RSC in 1985 and continued to work extensively in classical and musical theatre.

Highlights include Mickey in Blood Brothers in the West End, Joey in Pal Joey at the Bristol Old Vic the Male lead in Noel Cowards Star Quality at the Apollo, and the title roles in Hamlet at the Birmingham stage company and Macbeth at the Stafford theatre festival.

He is best known for his five year stint in The Bill as DS John Boulton and has appeared in Casualty, Eastenders, Darling Buds of May, Heartbeat and Waking the Dead.

More recently he has appeared in The Spanish Princess and The Cure which will be broadcast late 2019.

He is a documentary narrator for The BBC Natural History Unit. He records the worldwide versions of David Attenborough’s Blue planet. He also works for the Nat Geo channel on several series.

He is a founding partner of the communication coaching business GSB comms.
